Methodology 💡

Our analysis compares the costs associated with HelloFresh and Pepesto over a given week. We considered various household sizes and meal frequencies to provide a comprehensive overview.

Data Sources:

📊 HelloFresh pricing is based on current HelloFresh subscriptions and discounts in Switzerland. We consider a new user who gets a 50% discount on their first order, and existing users who don't have a discount code and pay the regular price.
📈 Pepesto pricing is dynamically calculated using local supermarket prices from Coop, Migros, Farmy, and Aldi.
🔍 We use HelloFresh recipes as a starting point and create equivalent Pepesto menus for different number of people and portion counts. Our technology quickly matches recipes to supermarket products, enabling rapid price calculation for both individual recipes and entire menus.
ℹ️ We list in the FAQ below the HelloFresh recipes we used, their Pepesto equivalent menus and recipes, and the prices we encountered.

In the previous three questions, you can find the current price when you open any of the Pepesto menu links. The price is dinamically calculated based on the recipe products, their availability and price. When we match a recipe, we try to match the recipe to products that are available now, so that you can buy all the ingredients for the recipe.

Thanks for asking! Here is the process on a high level:

Download and install the Pepesto app.
Adjust the portions in settings. Portions in Pepesto is the equivalent of people in HelloFresh.
Import the recipes (recipes is the number of meals in HelloFresh). When importing a recipe (either from HelloFresh or anywhere else), Pepesto adjusts the recipe based on the portions.
Add the recipe to the meal plan.
Have a look at the price and the shopping list.

However, if you reach a usage limit based on your activity, you can unlock unlimited access with a one-time payment of 16 CHF every 3 months. Alternatively, you can share the app with a friend to gain an additional 7 days of free access without any payment.

We noted a couple of things we would like to improve:

In the Swiss version of the HelloFresh website, you can only select 2 or 4 people. We used only the Swiss version of HelloFresh. In other countries, the number of people might differ (e.g., in the UK, you can select 2, 3, or 4 people).
From our experience, if you do groceries online, there’s a good chance you’ll also purchase other household items you need. We'd like to consider that angle in the next version of the analysis, as it might further increase the value of the delivery and Pepesto.
Figure out of a more consistent way to include delivery fees (for HelloFresh or grocery stores). We didn't include any delivery fees in the final calculation, but we would like to take them into account for the next version.
For the heavy-protein/meat menus, we've only included meat meals. In reality, users are likely to pick some non-meat options, which will further bring the prices down (meat is indeed quite expensive!). We'll consider ways how to optimize it the next time.
We'd like to work with a designer to make it more visually appealing. :)
